What is Labor Day? What do we celebrate?

In the United States Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrating the social and economic achievements of American workers and honoring the American labor movement's contributions to the country's strength and prosperity. Labor Day originated from the late 19th-century labor activism and union parades. Observed on the first Monday of September, marks the unofficial end of summer and the start of fall.

I am a strong believer that knowing our history is critical. So, let’s review some historical roots.

§  The holiday arose during the Industrial Revolution when workers fought for shorter workdays and better conditions.

§  The first Labor Day celebrations featured parades and picnics, organized by workers and labor unions in the 1880s.

§  Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

The holiday is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of American laborers. It serves as a reminder of the historical struggles for workers' rights and the role of unions in achieving them. But, for many Americans, the three-day weekend created by Labor Day signifies the end of the summer season.

Traditionally people celebrate with street parades, athletic events, and gatherings. The holiday weekend is often marked by barbecues, getaways, and shopping sales. This year let’s not forget what we are really celebrating om Labor Day. The labor movement remains strong in this country and unions continue to play a critical role ensuring workers’ rights.

Today I witnessed a demonstration in an affluent community —signs against the current administration; pleas to the more progressive politicians to do something! Anything —To get us back on the right track!

SO—-I ask you— where are we today? Are workers better or worse? Are we headed in the right direction? You decide! The mid trm elections are around the corner!
